Lamp & Lighting Fire Safety
- Keep all paper, fabric or furniture well clear of lamp bulbs.
- Halogen lamps burn with such high heat that if anything flammable should touch the bulb, such as curtains, cloth and paper, it could start a fire.
- Keep all pets away from Halogen lamps. They could knock the lamp over, starting a fire.
- Keep small children away from Halogen lamps.
- Check extension cords for frayed or exposed wires or loose plugs.
- Replace any that are worn, cracked or frayed.
- Replace any lamp or light that overheats, shocks, shorts, smokes or sparks.
- Shut off, unplug and replace lamps that flicker.
- Shut off and replace light cords and switches that are hot to the touch.
- Never force a three-prong plug into a two-slot outlet or extension cord.
- Do not run light or electrical cords beneath rugs or upholstery, over nails, or across high-traffic areas. Change their route, so the hot cord doesn't ignite the fabric.
- Don’t trap light or electric cords against walls where heat can build.
- Don't overload extension cords or outlets.
- If so, the wires might be working too hard. Distribute what's plugged in to other outlets in the room, or plug in fewer things.
